eBooks and Audiobooks Now Available for Download
Ada Community Library staff are very excited to inform you that we have officially expanded our services regarding digital media. Library cardholders can now download a variety of best-selling audiobooks and eBooks from the library’s OverDrive website (id8.lib.overdrive.com) anytime, anywhere!
The digital collection currently offers just a few hundred teen and adult popular fiction and non-fiction titles to choose from but, as with our print material collection, this digital collection will continue to grow each month.
You can browse the collection, check out with your library card, and download to PC, Mac®, and many mobile devices. To get started, you will need to install free software. For audiobooks this means OverDrive® Media Console™. To read eBooks, you’ll need Adobe® Digital Editions. Titles can be enjoyed immediately or transferred to a variety of devices, including iPod®, Kindle, Nook, Sony® Reader™, and many others. You can return eBook titles early as a courtesy to other readers, but all titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period so there are no late fees!
This new service, made possible through a collaboration of eight Idaho libraries and powered by OverDrive, is free for patrons through their library card. To get started downloading audiobooks, eBooks, and more, visit the library’s website at www.adalib.org and look for the OverDrive link, go directly to the library’s OverDrive website at id8.lib.overdrive.com, or stop into your local branch for more information.
We hope you enjoy this new service!

I am completely disappointed
I am completely disappointed is this new service. Today I check the selections for Mystery/Thrillers for both Audiobooks and eBooks. The listing for the audio books was 25 of which only 4 were available for checkout. For eBooks only a total of 54 selections were listed with 9 available for check out. That is pathetic!
Prior to the last two digital service offerings, we enjoyed Netlibrary which offered hundreds of choices. What happened? Why are we not receiving better service today than we did two years ago?
Thank you for your comments.
Thank you for your comments. We, too, appreciated the significant number of audio titles within NetLibrary’s collection. Unfortunately budget constraints accompanied by NetLibrary changing into another service necessitated a change in how we offer digital audiobooks. This OverDrive service provided a venue for not only continuing to circulate digital audiobooks but also ebooks (and eventually even digital movies and music) however the service model is very different from NetLibrary.
With OverDrive, instead of subscribing to a packaged collection we are purchasing individual titles just as we do with print materials. Unfortunately, audio titles can be quite expensive - up to $95 each. Even with group collaboration, budget constraints resulted in a limited audiobook collection as we initiated the service. While we could have waited to roll out this new service until we had a larger collection built up, we felt it was more important to get the new service operating right away, particularly to serve ebook demand, and work to build both collections in the coming months.
Each month we will be adding more digital audiobooks just as we do with our physical collection. We appreciate your patience as this new collection develops. And, as with our physical collection, we also welcome specific suggestions for purchase – titles or authors. A purchase suggestion form can be found online.
Thank you once again for taking time to provide input in this area.
Ever since Kindle really
Ever since Kindle really took off, the publishing world has been getting stingier with their regulations. I wish there was more available right now, but I realize it's an expense for our library and am just grateful that the library is branching out into all areas for it's patrons. Thanks! :)
The kids received Kindle's
The kids received Kindle's for Christmas with the express intent to be able to download eBooks from the library. However, I should have looked at what was offered before doing it. There aren't any options for kids under 12 and very little those just a little older. Will the library be considering eBooks for younger children? Series of interest are 39 Clues; 39 Clues Cahills vs Vespers; Charlie Bones; Fablehaven; Dr Seuss (for the very young), etc. More JD Robb would be great too.
Thanks.
We appreciate this
We appreciate this information. Due to limited funds, the group felt it would be best to focus what there is available on adult materials and teen materials of interest to adults. Materials for children will certainly be added at some point. Knowing your children are anxiously awaiting them, we will try to move that up. Thank you for your suggestions and for your patience.
I am a little disappointed
I am a little disappointed in the audio & ebook programs and I understand the cost to run them. I listened to one audio and one ebook, I was finished with them early but there was no way to turn them in. There must be a way to return them early so another person can download them.
Thanks for your comment.
Thanks for your comment. Actually, ebooks may be returned early, and that is appreciated since many currently have waiting lists. Eaudio titles may not be returned early, and we agree that is unfortunate. If you are a fast listener however, choosing the 7-day checkout over the 14-day option would be helpful. To return an eBook early: Open Adobe Digital Editions on your computer - In the Library View, click on the book you want to return - Click the triangular button next to the title to open the Item Options window - Click on Return Borrowed Item. To return Kindle eBooks early: Go to the Amazon website - Sign in to your account - Under Your Amazon choose Manage Your Kindle - Enter your password again - Use the Action menu to the right of the borrowed book you would like to return - Choose Return this book. Please contact staff at any of our locations for further guidance. Thank you for your interest in returning items early to benefit other users.
