Summary
The Summer Reading Program Assistant is responsible for assisting patrons participating in the Summer Reading Program. Occasionally they may be asked to assist with other basic library support tasks. This is a part time, temporary position during the summer months, approximately 10 hours per week for 11 weeks.

Essential Job Functions 

  • Register library users for the Summer Reading Program, and explain the program to them.
  • Pass out prizes for the Summer Reading Program as participants reach designated levels.
  • Document participants’ reading progress throughout the summer.
  • Assist with children’s programming and events, including preparation, set-up, and take down.
  • Answer routine directional questions, referring other patron requests to appropriate staff as needed

Additional Duties and Responsibilities 

  • May assist with other basic library support tasks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Must be a minimum of 16 years of age and presently attending or a graduate of high school or equivalent program.
  • Must be interested in a career in libraries, education, research, STEM, or related field
  • Working knowledge of basic office equipment including computers and applicable software applications.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and to work independently
  • Ability to provide patrons with directional assistance and referrals to other staff as needed
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Must exhibit a positive and cheerful attitude when dealing with patrons and staff
  • Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance to allow for effective teamwork

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • Will work in a general library environment where subjected to working around others and occasionally independently, working mainly inside (with some outdoor activities), and a moderate noise level.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds, and push/pull loaded carts of library materials
  • Requires sufficient dexterity to operate office, computer, or other technical equipment
  • Ability to hear and speak clearly and must have visual acuity to distinguish letters, words, and numbers as needed
  • Will regularly walk, stand, sit, reach and grasp and occasionally stoop, bend or kneel throughout the workday
