Summary
The Summer Internship Program is designed to provide an on-the-job opportunity to gain “real world” work experience in a public library and firsthand knowledge of the important roles public libraries play in a community. Under the guidance of an assigned mentor, the Summer Intern will have the opportunity to work with children of all ages during the busy summer season and to build on leadership and creative problem solving skills as they plan and implement a children’s or teen’s program near the end of their internship. The Summer Intern will also have the opportunity to gain knowledge and/or experience in public library services at both the Victory and Lake Hazel branches as they perform library support tasks that are important to the mission and goals of the library.

Essential Job Functions 

  • Learn various library services including day to day operations through observation of various collaboration meetings, job shadowing, and participation.
  • Support the Summer Reading Program by registering patrons and explaining the program to them, passing out prizes, documenting participant’s reading progress and other various tasks.
  • Assist with programming and events, including preparation, assisting patrons, set-up, and take down.
  • Participate in outreach activities.
  • Plan and implement, with the possibility to lead, a children’s or teen’s program near the end of the internship.
  • Perform basic circulation duties such as shelving library materials, shelf reading, and retrieving library materials to fill hold requests.
  • Answer routine directional questions, referring other patron requests to appropriate staff as needed.
  • May assist in writing grants.
  • May assist with library displays and other library support tasks that will help the library to fulfill its mission and goals.
  • May participate in library professional development opportunities (i.e. Webinars)
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Currently in High School (must be at least 16), seeking a degree/certificate at an accredited university/college or seeking a career transfer.
  • Must be interested in a career in libraries, education, research, STEM, or related field
  • Working knowledge of basic office equipment including computers and applicable software applications.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and to work independently
  • Ability to provide patrons with directional assistance and referrals to other staff as needed
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Must exhibit a positive and cheerful attitude when dealing with patrons and staff
  • Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance to allow for effective teamwork
  • Must have reliable transportation to get to multiple locations (branch and off-site) when scheduled. On occasion may work at more than one location in a day.
  • Available to work Tuesdays and Thursdays is required.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • Will work in a general library environment where subjected to working around others and occasionally independently, working mainly inside (with some outdoor activities), and a moderate noise level.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds, and push/pull loaded carts of library materials
  • Requires sufficient dexterity to operate office, computer, or other technical equipment
  • Ability to hear and speak clearly and must have visual acuity to distinguish letters, words, and numbers as needed
  • Will regularly walk, stand, sit, reach and grasp and occasionally stoop, bend or kneel throughout the workday
