Summary
The Circulation Aide is responsible for locating, shelving, and maintaining the proper order of library materials as well as assisting with other basic library support tasks.

Essential Job Functions 

  • Collect from book drops, sort, and shelve library materials alphabetically or by Dewey Decimal System
  • Locate library materials as requested or for re-shelving
  • Shelf-read and straighten materials to maintain proper order. Shifts library materials to avoid overcrowding
  • Advise appropriate staff of items in disrepair as well as any other cataloging issues that arise
  • Perform basic circulation support duties, other than direct customer service (i.e. opening/closing duties)
  • Maintain a clean and welcoming library environment. Straighten furniture, clear items, light housekeeping, etc.
  • Answer routine directional questions, referring other patron requests to appropriate staff as needed.
  • Participate in job-related meetings and training.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • Checks in returned materials and sorts and routes the materials to their proper location as needed.
  • Search and retrieve library materials to fill hold requests
  • May assist with library displays, program set-up/take-down and materials, and other library support tasks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Must be a minimum of 16 years of age and presently attending or a graduate of high school or equivalent program.
  • Ability to compare names and numbers quickly and accurately
  • Working knowledge of basic office equipment including computers and applicable software applications.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and to work independently
  • Ability to provide patrons with directional assistance and referrals to other staff as needed
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff
  • Must be able to work at least one evening a week and some Saturdays

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • Will work in a general library environment where subjected to repetition, working independently but around others, working mainly inside, and a moderate noise level.
  • Ability to push/pull a loaded cart of library materials weighing up to 150 lbs.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. and shelve materials at various heights
  • Will walk, sit, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, reach and grasp throughout the workday.
  • Requires sufficient dexterity to occasionally operate a computer and other office equipment
  • Ability to hear and speak clearly and must have visual acuity to distinguish letters, words, and numbers as needed.
