Why is it a pick?

The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey is my all-time favorite mystery. The title refers to the saying that truth is the daughter of time. Inspector Alan Grant recuperating in hospital is given a post card of the face of a man accused of a heinous murder. Based on his own police experience, Grant believes the famous man can not be a murderer. One of the best written mysteries.
