Why is this a pick?:
The Marvel universe arises about 400 years before schedule, triggering the possible destruction of the universe. Many familiar Marvel superheroes put in an appearance, from the X-Men and Spider Man to Nick Fury. The story is by one of my favorite authors, Neil Gaiman. Adam Kubert's art is exceptional.

This video game plays like a board game, with mini games at the end of each round! A great game for younger kids. This can be played with up to four players at a time.

This (the seventh collection in the series) is a great 'jumping in' point for new readers. Kabuki, a former Japanese operative, had put down the sword and taken up the pen. The art is breathtaking - even if you don't want to read the story, look through this for the amazing artwork's sake!

Eric, Julie, and Neal are best friends. One day, they discover a flight of rainbow-colored stairs in a basement, leading to a magical world they never knew existed. Before they know what happens, they are racing to save Droon from the evil Lord Sparr. The first book in "The Secrets of Droon" series, 7-10 years. Books stand alone, but form a story arc when read in sequence.

Why is this a pick?:
I taught all my children to read with this book. Since this book is completely scripted, it takes the guesswork out of how to teach the lessons. Using pictures, stories, and visual clues, kids are off reading from day one.

Why is this a pick?:
When eleven year old aspiring scientist Flavia de Luce finds a dead bird with a stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak, she gets involved in a mystery that will require all of her cunning and resourcefulness to unravel. This is an old-fashioned mystery written for adults, and the reader of this audiobook is fantastic!

Why is this a pick?:
Witch-to-be Tiffany Aching has to rescue her brother from evil that lurks beyond the edges of reality -- and she is armed only with a frying pan and her common sense. Luckily, she has the 'help' of fierce, tattooed, six-inch tall, blue, kilt-wearing pictsies (don't you dare call them pixies!) This audiobook is funny AND suspenseful, and the reader is great! You'll love it!
The Amulet of Samarkand

Why is this a pick?:
Nathaniel, a not entirely likable apprentice magician, manages to summon the djinni Bartimaeus, much to the later's displeasure. The two are embroiled in rebellion, evil deeds, and espionage as Nathaniel orders Bartimaeus to steal the Amulet of Samarkand from the dangerous Simon Lovelace. The parts of the story told from Bartimaeus' point of view are hilarious.

Why is this a pick?:
This is a great adaptation of the Shakespeare Classic. It keeps Shakespeare's dialogue, but gives it a film noir feel. Filmed in black and white, fans of Joss Whedon will definitely recognize many of the actors from other Whedon projects.
Rapunzel's Revenge

Why is this a pick?:
After freeing herself from the tower, Rapunzel ignores the prince and instead teams up with Jack (of beanstalk fame.) Together they roam the Wild West, freeing the oppressed and fighting the evil witch Gothel who had kept Rapunzel imprisoned for so long. A fun retake on the fairy tale!

This book tells the true story of the author's dental turmoil. One day she is a perfectly normal preteen, then she has a bad fall and severely damages her front teeth. The fall-out from this goes on for years. A book for anyone who has ever not fit in. Great illustrations and story line.
