Primary Responsibilities -
The Circulation Assistant is responsible for checking in and shelving library materials as well as assisting on the public services circulation desk.

Essential Job Functions – fundamental position duties

  • Locate, sort, and shelve books, magazines, pamphlets, maps, newspapers, audio-visual materials, and other assorted library materials alphabetically by author and title, subject, and numerically by Dewey Decimal System;
  • Shelf read on an ongoing basis and shift items on shelves as needed;
  • Provide basic customer circulation assistance and directional reference service in-person or by phone which includes explaining library policies or procedures to patrons; checking materials in and out; collecting fines; issuing library cards; placing materials on reserve; assisting with collection inventory and searches for missing books; and searching for and/or inputting book and patron information through a PC;
  • Empty book drops, trash/recycle receptacles and perform other opening or closing duties;
  • Assemble or collate materials or performs other general clerical duties and/or repairs to materials

Minimum Qualifications – Experience, education and special skills

  • Must be a minimum of 16 years of age and presently attending or a graduate of high school or equivalent program.
  • Ability to compare names/numbers quickly and accurately; Ability to use subject, alphabetical, and numerical filing systems to accurately classify, file, and retrieve materials;
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
  • Basic customer service skills and experience; communication skills, tact and friendliness;
  • Knowledge of general office practices and procedures; of library operations, policies, procedures, terminology, and library catalog;
  • Ability to operate a PC and perform basic software functions such as Microsoft application and Internet operations, and e-mail usage;
  • Ability to assist patrons in use of technology;
  • Ability to be able to move, on carts, up to 150 pounds of weight and lift up to 25 pounds of weight;
  • Ability to deal effectively with frequent interruptions;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and the general public;
  • Ability to work Fridays, Saturdays and weeknight evenings.

Primary Responsibilities -
Under direction of the Branch Coordinator, create and maintain positive public relations with patrons, community members, and staff. Provide reference/readers advisory, technology assistance, programming, and circulation duties.

Essential Job Functions – fundamental position duties

  • Provides excellent customer service in locating information, answering reference/readers advisory inquiries and guiding patrons in the use of library resources
  • Provides circulation services including check-in, check-out, patron registration, resolution of patron problems within guidelines, etc
  • Plans and implements programs and outreach for youth and teens
  • Provides instruction and assistance to patrons in computer use
  • Explains library policies and procedures to patrons and resolves problems
  • Participates in evening and weekend work schedule
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications – Experience, education and special skills

  • Baccalaureate degree or equivalent education and experience and at least one year practical/applicable library experience.
  • Knowledge of a library’s collection, reference materials and general library policies, practices and procedures.
  • Customer service skills and experience; Excellent communication skills, tact and friendliness
  • Excellent computer skills; Ability to utilize computer hardware and software in the performance of duties
  • Ability to work in a team environment; to supervise and schedule the work of others, to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other organizations and the general public
  • Ability to provide reader’s advisory and reference services
  • Ability to respond positively to negative criticism from the public
  • Must have flexibility
  • Interest in and familiarity with programming along with a desire to work with all ages
  • Ability to bend, lift up to 50 lbs, and perform the physical demands of the position
