Primary Responsibilities -

The Associate Librarian provides assistance to patrons including research/reader's advisory, material location and use of resources, and programming.  He/She serves as a lead team member to administer library services and may coordinate a specialized service for the system.


Essential Job Functions - Fundamental position duties

Patron Services: 

  • Responds to patron inquiries, in person or by phone; explains library policies and procedures to patrons; and educates patrons on the use of library resources.
  • Provides instructions and assistance to patrons in computer use.
  • Plans and implements programming; assists in the assessment and statistical recordkeeping of programming services.
  • Assists with collection development and management and marketing of library services and materials.
  • Seeks and develops partnerships with local schools and businesses to provide services.
  • May assist in grant projects.
  • Represents the library at related library, consortium and community meetings and events.
  • Participates in outreach of programs and other services.

Team Management:

  • May supervise and manage staff schedules and training.
  • Performs a variety of tasks in the day-to-day operation in a branch setting.
  • Serves as liaison to community groups, other library staff and other area libraries.
  • Assists in training and providing guidance and direction to other staff.


Minimum Qualifications - Experience, education and special skills

  • Bachelor's degree with college level coursework in library science or equivalent education and experience, and at least three years of practical library experience.
  • Knowledge of the library's collection and reference materials and general library policies, practices and procedures.
  • Excellent communication and conflict management skills, tact and friendliness.
  • Demonstrated time management and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to take on responsibilities and adapt to changing situations.
  • Ability to work independently, showing initiative, good judgment and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other organizations and the general public.
  • Excellent computer skills, ability to utilize and assist others in using a variety of computer hardware and software.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends.
